Conceria La Perla Azzurra’s Dakota is some of the nicest leather in the world; especially when it comes to *veg tanned cowhide.  It’s firm tempered with a silky smooth grain side and a tight, clean flesh side.  It’s stuffed with just the right amount enough fat and oil to give it a moderately dense consistency without feeling greasy or heavy.  It burnishes great, which leads to some gorgeous edges because of it being struck through (i.e., there is full dye penetration of both grain and flesh).

The grain of this leather, unlike many of its other famous Italian cousins (esp. one that ends in “uttero,”) isn’t nearly as susceptible to marking and burnishing when on the workbench.  This, in addition to being more nourished (i.e., containing more fat/oil) and consequently more pliable, make working with Dakota a very pleasant experience.

At 5oz, Dakota has enough body to hold its own as unlined/unstructured totes and other types of bags, as well as other items like single layer watch straps, lanyards, key fobs, etc.  At split weights 2-3oz, it’s fantastic for wallet exteriors, interiors and lining for larger goods.

*It’s important to note that there are some differences between the Turquoise and Barbie colors of Dakota and the more traditional colors in our lineup.  These two colors are made from a different base leather which is tanned using a synthetic, non-metallic tanning agent.  So, these two colors are not considered to be either vegetable tanned or chrome tanned.  The use of synthetic tanning agent produces a lighter colored base leather which is better for producing brighter, more vibrant colors.

Dakota comes in double shoulder form, so by nature may have some range natural striation marks through the chest area of the hide.

GRADING:

– Grade A – Great quality, very little to no flaws besides what is mentioned above.

– Grade B – Not-so-perfect – will have more noticeable range marks or scratches, broken grain, or slight color variation over a small portion of the panel.
