The recipe for La Perla’s vacchetta is simple – start with an excellent natural veg tan leather, hot stuff it in a drum with animal fats (to soften and nourish), air dry, and enjoy.
The process of hot stuffing the leather with animal fats requires tumbling the leather in a heated drum. Tumbling essentially massages the leather and loosens it, while also giving the grain a slightly pebbled texture. With the infusion of fats in to the leather, it become richer, denser, and more resilient/weatherproof than when it started.
This vacchetta has a medium-firm temper, and works as just about any leather good you can think of. It does lose a lot of body when split to 3oz or below, so take that in to consideration if you’re looking to use it for minimalist style small goods.
